YouTube Views To Count Toward UK Singles Charts

The UK singles chart is undergoing substantial changes. For the first time, streams from official YouTube videos will be factored into the traditional way of youtube ranking UK singles. Official videos played on YouTube, Tidal, Apple, and Spotify will count towards an artist’s streams, while unauthorised videos and other user-generated content will not.

Views on YouTube will be counted in the UK singles rankings.

Since its introduction in 2005, YouTube has risen by leaps and bounds, and it would be naive to overlook the platform’s importance in the music industry. With over 5.2 billion views on Despacito, music videos have thrived on YouTube. There is simply a following there that cannot be ignored. With this in mind, the Official Charts Company has concluded that ignoring YouTube’s immense power is no longer an option. To be fair, ignoring it five years ago was illogical…

The updated adjustments will reflect how the chart determines rankings. This implies that beginning July 6, views from official videos on YouTube, Apple, Tidal, and Spotify will be included in the existing UK chart. Martin Talbot, the chart’s chief executive, had this to say about the new rules:

“The way music lovers consume music is evolving month by month. When music has a video linked to it, it sounds outdated to remark, “We’re only going to count the song.”

Sales and streams from 15,000 stores and digital outlets are already calculated in the official chart. As a result of these adjustments, the chart will now accurately reflect genuine fan engagement with performers on video platforms. On Friday, July 6, fans may listen to the first Official Chart to include video feeds on BBC Radio 1.

What does this imply for musicians?

Video engagements were not previously factored into the official UK chart’s ranking system. Everything is about to change in a positive way. What you need to know about the shift and how it will affect artists is as follows:

Streaming music for a fee carries more weight: A “sell” is defined as 150 streams of a song in the present system. With the new modifications, the ratio for premium customers will drop to 100:1, while the ratio for free users will jump to 600:1. It will apply equally to video and audio streams.

Long wait: Considering video streams was mentioned four years ago. At the time, YouTube was the only platform that offered a complete video service, and worries about royalty payments and data transparency stymied the transition.

Music played on free services like YouTube and Spotify does not contribute to the charts in some countries, such as France and Italy. However, Talbot dismissed this idea.

“We recognize that some younger fans may not have access to credit cards and that some low-income music listeners may not be able to purchase a subscription but may nonetheless listen to genuine, ad-supported streaming services.”

It’s also worth noting that you can’t get your favorite artists to the top of the charts by spamming them. Additional streams do not count once you have played a song 10 times in 24 hours. Artists that use effective YouTube marketing strategies, on the other hand, will undoubtedly gain.

“It’s all about the timing.” So many people nowadays only watch the video; they aren’t even aware of the tune. It’s a good thing they’ll be considered for the charts today.”
